Tasajara online

I constantly think about the best, most efficient, way to connect with the community of Tasajera. As many of you know, I live in Mansfield, PA and since I cannot be in El Salvador with frequency (although I want to) I have to develop a way to establish a solid communication with them. A communication channel is key to the success of the Humen project, because we need to be constantly monitoring our progress and paying close attention to what the community is saying.

I am a strong believer in communication, and if you think about our situation, it is not easy to establish an ongoing communication because of 2 reasons:

  1. they are not “digitally included”. Since Tasajera is a low income community in El Salvador, only a handful of people are capable of accessing the internet, and even fewer have the knowledge of how to use it. Therefore, my plan for my next trip in December is to teach a group of young men and women how to use a computer and the internet. This will allow them to be more digitally included and communicate with us through online channels like Google Drive, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
  2. The Education system in Tasajera is in terrible shape, mainly because people cannot afford the cost and stop paying the monthly fee ($10). But people cannot afford it and the school refuses to expel those who don’t pay. As a consequence, school is broke and trying to educate many kids. This makes our connectivity problem even larger.

I believe things will change, and we are working hard to see a change in this place.

Security and Development

Seguridad

Security

Tasajera Island in El Salvador is one of the safest places on the world, because it is protected by God. This community houses four churches that many people attend to; they gather every evening to worship God. There is also a physical security force: Police.

You can go around the Tasajera community without fear of being mugged or being a victim at all, proof of this is that many tourists that come to the island comment that this place is beautiful in all its forms. The natural beauty of Tasajera is composed by giant mangroves, the Jaltepeque Bay, the River Lempa, and its beautiful virgin beach side. Tasajera also houses a turtle shelter, which is a main tourist attraction. Overall, safety is one thing people leave happy with, because they can walk through the community at any time of the day or night, which makes them feel more relaxed to enjoy their visit.

Lack of Development

This community is an amazing natural gem, but has very little resources to provide proper education to its inhabitants. Children are not being given the right formation; they are the future of Tasajera. Education standard is directly linked to the lack of economic resources, and leads people to leave the community in search of a better education opportunity. Yet, only a handful can afford this, so most children and young people decide to drop out of school.

Response from Jeremias

The HUMEN project has brought us a big amount of knowledge that was unknown to use before this project came to our community. We now know the importance and the urge of practicing organic farming methods. First, we want to embrace sustainability, because is one of the most important things and necessary to help the economy of our community and its development. Our idea and our mission is to share this new knowledge and to invite all the people of the community and whoever is interested to introduce them to this type of development, which is founded in the principles of sustainability.

We know that organic farming is completely natural and we are helping the reduction of contamination and pollution by fertilizing our soils with organic material that don’t cause negative impacts on the environment; instead it improves the health of the soil and ours. Our hope is to see this project grow from a simple, even humble, beginning to a growth that it may reach the entire community and satisfy all its needs.

Consequently, develop an internal market that primarily reduces the expenses of importing vegetables and herbs in the island, an every-day expense that is high. By accomplishing this reduction of expenses, the money could be used to cover other important necessities. For example, children regularly drop out of school because their parents cannot afford it. With this development and the savings we can improve other aspects of our community that need reconstruction, such as Education.

Atentamente……. Francisco, Alexanser y Geremias.
